Meet Dustin DeFrates: Builder of People, Places, and Purpose

Building people, places, and purpose at Our Local Life.

If you’ve spent any time around the Our Local Life community, chances are you’ve felt the presence of Dustin DeFrates long before he ever introduced himself. There’s something unmistakable about how he shows up. As co-founder of Our Local Life, a collective platform for community, wellness, and entrepreneurial growth, DeFrates doesn’t just build companies, he builds people, cultures, and the spaces that allow both to thrive. With a spirit rooted in service and a rare blend of vulnerability, vigor, and visionary insight, he brings coherence and connection to everything he touches.

“I love building people, companies, and the real estate that houses them,” DeFrates shares. It’s a mantra that reflects his multidimensional life, from leading multiple businesses to leading by example in emotional growth, health, and spiritual alignment.

Dustin’s path has been anything but linear. His “Soul” journey began in the pews of a church, touring Latin America in a choir as a child. That structure gave him discipline, but the spiritual layers came later, after shedding old identities and confronting the inner dissonance that so many silently carry. “I had to re-find myself through necessity,” he reflects, recalling the moment he realized his life had drifted from alignment.

His “Mind” has been forged through trial and truth. From relationship ruptures to business betrayals, personal loss, and divorce, his path has been anything but theoretical, it’s been lived. “I’m still fighting that version of me that had to put walls up,” he admits, and yet his commitment to transparency remains unwavering.

Mind, body, and soul in practice

On the “Body” level, Dustin’s reflections are refreshingly honest. “I took a nap last week,” he laughs, “and I’ve never taken a nap in my life!” Aging gracefully, he’s learning to adapt to a new rhythm, one that honors performance but doesn’t chase youth. It’s about sustainability now. Strength that endures.

A self-declared lifelong learner, spiritual seeker, and father, Dustin sees Our Local Life as a place where you don’t just network, you remember who you are. Inspired by Napoleon Hill’s concept of a mental board of advisors, he hopes the platform becomes a kind of living boardroom, filled with body, mind, and soul leaders others can learn from, helping members tap into their own “superpowers.”

DeFrates is not just an entrepreneur, he’s a bridge-builder. He’s active in a secular men’s group focused on emotional intelligence, practices Kundalini Yoga, attends church with his kids, and regularly joins sound baths. With seven companies and counting, he still carves out time for spiritual grounding. The communities he’s part of reflect the integrated man he’s become.

That integration also drives his vision for the spaces he creates: curated community environments that don’t just look good, but feel right. “Whether it’s a business setting or a spiritual setting,” he says, “the space has to match the work.” Dustin doesn’t compartmentalize his roles, he integrates them. And that’s what makes him magnetic. He’s not interested in perfection, but in presence.

Asked what he hopes people see in him, Dustin replies without hesitation: “Truth and authenticity.” His intensity and perfectionism may come across as sharp edges, but they’re forged from a sincere desire to uplift those around him. “Even when I fail, I hope people know I meant well.” Leadership, for Dustin, doesn’t have to be loud. It has to be rooted. And when it is, it builds more than business, it builds legacy. Whether in a boardroom, on a yoga mat, or designing a space that holds community intention, Dustin DeFrates shows up to build something real.

Chris: Dustin DeFreitas, my man, a man of many talents and wonders. What stands out to me about you is your ability to bring energy and connect a wide array of people, whether it’s in an entrepreneurial setting, health-related fields, or breathwork and yoga. You have many interests and talents; can you tell us a little more about yourself?

Dustin: Well, thank you for saying that. I consider myself a lifelong learner; everything excites me. If there’s something I don’t understand, I love to dive in and learn more about it. I think that’s for my own benefit, I’m certainly self-serving on a day-to-day basis, but what I love more than anything is the opportunity to share what I’ve learned with my "tribe" and the community generally.

Chris: As anyone grows into these skills, there are challenges and areas of growth. Can you walk us through a few moments that led you to become the person you are today?

Dustin: There are a lot. If we’re talking about "Mind, Body, and Soul," we can start with the Soul. I was raised in a church and was there nearly every Sunday and Wednesday for my entire pre-college life. I toured the United States and Latin America in a choir, acting and singing. That really framed my religious experience, which I’d distinguish from a spiritual experience because I hadn't found myself spiritually yet. Eventually, there was a "rebellion" against that background, as many people experience. I had to re-find myself through necessity. I wasn't happy; I was heavier than I am now, and I knew many things in my life were out of alignment.

Dustin: On the "Mind" side, I’ve unfortunately gone through many unfulfilled promises with business partners, a divorce, and betrayals. Those things forced me to put walls up, which is the opposite of how I prefer to be. I would prefer to have no walls and pure transparency. Knowing what betrayal feels like has created a person that I am still "fighting" in a way.

Dustin: On the "Body" side, I’ve always been healthy and strong, but as I’ve turned 44, I’ve struggled with performance. I used to be able to party with the best of them and kick ass the next day. Now, I’m recognizing I’m not the body I used to be. I took a nap last week, I’ve never taken a nap in my life! I’m recognizing a need to manage the natural changes of my body so I can stay healthy and strong.

Chris: I think anyone on a journey can relate to that; there is always something we are working on. As one of the co-founders of Our Local Life, what would you say is a "successful experience" for someone looking to join the community?

Dustin: I would not be here without a lot of people who helped me understand my own "superpowers." I think the greatest thing in the world would be if we can feature and promote other people and give them a voice. In the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, he suggests having a mental "board" of people you respect to help you approach problems. My board is Alexander Hamilton, Elon Musk, and Ray Dalio. I know enough about those guys to imagine how they would approach certain things. I hope this community can provide "light posts" for people, others they can relate to and learn from so they can save time and energy in their own lives.

Chris: So the hope is that there will be a "board" of body, mind, and soul experts that members can learn from to expand their perspectives?

Dustin: That’s the hope. Everything’s a dream until it’s built. I’m excited that we have people like yourself behind the mission and the spirit to want to give freely to others.

Chris: What communities are you currently a part of?

Dustin: I attend church on Sundays when I’m not skiing or on the lake. I also bring my children. I’m in a secular men’s group called the Rising Sons, which focuses on emotional intelligence. The goal is to learn how to react better when life challenges come at you. Currently, I’m doing 100 days of Kundalini Yoga with a dear friend. I attend sound baths and do a lot of spiritual work to reset my body and mind. I also run seven different companies, so a lot of my community is spent with the people who support those businesses. We learn from and build each other up every day.

Chris: How has your mindset evolved over the past several years, and what fuels your vision for the future?

Dustin: I have a passion for life. I love learning, creating, and being able to look back at what I’ve built. I build people, companies, and the real estate that houses them. When I reflect on what that means, "building people" is about giving them an opportunity to find themselves by creating success within their role in a company. That lights me up more than anything. I love watching people learn and find their own superpowers.

Chris: Bonus question: What is something you hope that someone sees in you?

Dustin: I try as hard as I can to live in truth and authenticity. I hope people can look at me and say that I have done my best to uphold that standard. Even when I fail, I hope people see that I meant well. I want them to see that I come from a place of servitude and a desire to help others be their best selves. I hope they see that through my sometimes abrupt or aggressive personality! I can be very critical and a perfectionist, but the intention is always to help.

Chris: To wrap up, we have what we call the "Instagrammable Quote." Is there a quote that comes to mind?

Dustin: I already said it: “I love building people, companies, and the real estate that houses them.” I once went to a sound bath that was held in a garage full of Mercedes. Half the room was cars, and the other half was a reception area. It was a weird environment; it didn't have good energy. If you can create a housing and an environment that matches the feeling of the work, whether it's a business setting or a spiritual setting, it allows the community to thrive. Creating that space is my passion.

Chris: Dustin DeFreitas, it’s been a pleasure. Thank you for sharing.

Dustin: Thanks so much, Chris.
